Rostering for cafés, bars and restaurants

Build next week’s roster in minutes, not Sunday night.

Tell Rosie who works for you and when they’re free. It writes the roster and checks it against rest and hours rules. You look it over, then send it out. On Team and up, it goes straight to the staff app on everyone’s phone.

From $29 a month, 25 staff included. Free for 30 days on any plan, no card. Made in New Zealand.

What happens next: pick a plan, open the sign-in link we email you, then add your team or start from a photo or spreadsheet of your current roster. Check it and send it out.

Step 01

Start with your people.

Who they are, the roles they can work, and the days they are free. Open anyone from the roster and change it in place. That is the whole setup before a first roster.

Who it's for

Built for the places that close up.

Cafés, bars, restaurants and the kitchens behind them. Anywhere a week of work has to be shaped around real people, and the rules that apply to them.

  • A café counter mid-service, a barista working the machine under warm pendant lights.

    Cafés

Openers, closers, and the barista who can only do Tuesdays.

  • A neighbourhood bar during evening service, bottles lit behind the counter.

    Bars

Late finishes, and the rest gap the law wants before the next shift.

  • A small restaurant dining room during evening service, tables occupied.

    Restaurants

Front and back of house on one roster, with a wage estimate on Team and up.

  • A chef plating a dish on the pass in a commercial kitchen.

    Kitchens

Certifications that expire, and a roster that knows before you do.

The shape of it

One shift, all the way to payroll.

You build it once. They clock in against it, you approve what actually happened, and the hours go to payroll. Nobody types the same shift twice.

Notice what stage three keeps. Fix a clock-in and Rosie holds on to what the clock really said, right beside your correction, so you can always see what changed and who changed it. Clock-in and timesheets are on Team and up. Approved hours go to Xero or a payroll file. On Roster you can export the roster as a CSV.

Why a shift went unfilled

Every gap comes with its reason.

A Saturday bar shift it could not fully fill. It checked fourteen people, and only one could work it. Open any row to see the rule that ruled the others out.

Sample data. You get this for every shift it cannot fill.

A café floor mid-service, tables occupied and staff working behind the counter.

Every one of these rules used to live in someone’s head, at 9pm on a Sunday.

Staff app

Your team never opens a spreadsheet.

Shifts, clock-in, leave and swaps on their own phone. Managers approve from the same app. The staff app is on Team and up.

Rules

It already knows the rules where you are.

You do not have to teach it. Pick your country and it starts with the right ones.
  • Breaks, and when they are due
  • Rest between shifts
  • What under-18s can work
  • Leave, sick days and public holidays
  • Your own maximum hours and minimum rest, on every plan
  • Rules for each employment type and weekend and holiday pay rates, on Team and up

Upkeep

Rule changes, written down.

Rosie has rules for six countries. When we change one, it goes on a dated list. Here are a few of the entries.
  1. Added parental, bereavement, jury duty and study leave
  2. Rules can now differ per venue, not just per business, on Business
  3. Added the US advance-notice rules, city by city
  4. Added five Australian awards, with estimated pay rates to check
  5. Added right-to-disconnect support for Australia and Ireland

The full list, with the date each rule came into force, is on How it works.

Price

Straight answers

The things people ask before they start.

  • How long before I have a roster I can publish?

Rosie needs three things: your staff, the roles they work, and one venue. Add those, or start from a photo or spreadsheet of your current roster, and Rosie can write the week. Setup also covers things like leave and clock-in, but none of that has to be done before your first roster.

  • Which plan should I try?

If you want the roster written and will print it or share it yourself, try Roster. If you want staff to see their shifts on their phone, clock in and ask for leave, try Team. If you need different rules at each venue, a clock-in tablet, or your own break rules and break sign-off at clock-out, try Business. Every plan is free for 30 days, and you can change plan any time.

  • Do I have to retype my current roster?

No. Take a photo of the roster on the wall, or upload a spreadsheet (CSV or Excel) or a PDF. Rosie reads it and adds the staff and shifts for you.

  • What if Rosie puts someone in the wrong place?

Drag them. The roster Rosie writes is a starting point, not a decision. Every shift stays editable, and for any shift it can’t fill, it tells you why. Nothing reaches your staff until you press Publish.

  • Will it actually pay for itself?

Only you can say, and we would rather not guess for you. It comes down to what an hour of your Sunday is worth against one monthly price. Every plan is free for 30 days, so you can check before you pay anything.

  • What happens to my data if I leave?

Export your roster and staff list as CSV (plus timesheets and reports on Team and up), then delete the account yourself. You do it in the app, not through a support ticket. There is no exit interview and no retention call.

  • Do my staff have to learn something new?

On Team and up, staff get a phone app that shows their shifts, clocks them in and takes leave requests. They never see the manager side. On Roster, staff don't get the app, so you print or export the roster for them.

Why it exists

Built by two people who had the problem.

“We both ran tourism operations for years. Rostering was the worst part of the week, and every tool we tried made it worse. So we built the one we wanted.”
Matt and Dom · Founders
